New York Art Week Extravaganza 2023

The month of May is when the Big Apple is celebrating its Art Week, stretching it from May 5th through 22nd, where museums, galleries and art fairs come together to share the best of what the art world offers. For art lovers, this is a great time for a spring break or a weekend stay in NYC when the weather is generally at its best behavior. I managed to attend three art fairs on the last weekend of this extravaganza before it ended. Here’s what I like and didn’t much care for….

The Armory Art Show… A Place for Inspiration and Art Lovers

If you are looking for inspiration, escapism, or altogether a different visualization experience, the Armory Art Show usually doesn’t disappoint. I have not been to the show since pre-pandemic and was please to know that the show has been moved to the Javits Center, shifting its schedule to early September. The show is unconventional and eye-catching, fostering emerging art trends and new up-and-coming artists of every continent, all in one place to see…
 
 

Art Fairs in NYC …. Going Wild in 2022

May 5-12  was New York City Art Week. As expected, there were plenty of art fairs and gallery openings for anyone who wants to be inspired or learn about what today’s contemporary artists are creating.  I managed to attend three art fairs, all of them interesting and over the top with all kinds of messaging from climate change to reproductive rights, nuclear proliferation and just fun pieces that range from the peculiar to the outlandish.   I am happy to share the venues and photos of what seem to be trending these days….
 

Art Fairs are Slowly Making a Comeback Starting with Frieze

During the first week of May, the annual Frieze Art Fair was back in New York City with a lot less pomp than usual. The Frieze Art Fair in NYC happens to be one of my favorite shows. They also sponsor a show in Los Angeles, London and now Seoul. The Frieze Art Fair features an extensive list of local and international contemporary art galleries, and commissioned artists’ projects, as well as variety of art education forums and a magazine .  This year it was not held  at Randall’s Island since the number of galleries was down to about 1/3 and mostly US based. International galleries were missing and clearly the difference was apparent as much of the art work was not as diverse or excitingly. Restrictions to get in were…..
