ZONAMACO….Mexico’s Premier Latin American Art Fair

IMG 9226 scaled

II arranged my travels to be in Mexico City during its Art Week scheduled February 7-11th, 2024. Here is why…. ZONAMACO is the largest art fair platform in Latin America, which stands for “México Arte Contemporáneo Organizacion.” Unlike other art fairs I’ve attended, Mexico’s premier Latin American Art Fair is a combination of four sections: art, design, photography and antiques, all under one roof. Now entering its 20th anniversary, the fair has achieved an international reputation with a focus but not exclusively on Latin American art and it does not disappoint ….

The Power of Art in Transforming Communities

Screenshot 2024 01 14 at 11.35.34 PM e1705293383587

Art is an universal language that engages us to reflect, learn and be inspired by its presence in whatever form. Therefore, it is not surprising that art universally has been a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown districts, neighborhoods, and commercial corridors. There are tons of examples of how art a in any form has contributed to transforming abandoned buildings, parcels, and street corridors into vibrant sites that attract many of us to be present or become part of its transformation.  But art can also be a gentrifier and displace both longtime residents and businesses from remaining in these communities. The question here: How can art be part of a revitalization strategy without entirely changing the fabric of a community that leads to its displacement? I’d like to share a model of how it’s being done in a historically Black city in Miami Dade, Florida that I have the pleasure of working with for the last 14 years…

Art Basel 2023….  A Review of a Rapturous Week for Art Lovers

IMG 5032 EDIT

This year’s Art Basel-Miami Art Week was rapturous for not only art lovers but also for the city’s business community. Art Basel has truly transformed Miami in the last 10 years, making it one of the most vibrant cultural experiences, no longer limited to the convention center in Miami Beach. Art Basel has changed Miami from being a vacation spot to also becoming an art destination. Art is now one of the driving forces in the city’s redevelopment efforts, which unfortunately have also caused the gentrification of neighborhoods….

Review: New York City’s First Photo Fair, and the 2023 Armory Art Show

Untitled design 1

During the September Labor Day week, the art world was back in full swing in New York with five art fairs and multiple gallery openings and exhibitions. For art lovers, NYC offers so many opportunities to attend art fairs during the months of May and September. I attended two art fairs during the weekend that did not disappoint. Both offered cutting edge, experimental discoveries of what the human mind is capable of creating.  Here’s what I like and didn’t much care for …

Karl Lagerfeld’s Exhibition at the MET: Controversial and Dazzling

karl.l e1691025623159

As someone who loves both art and fashion, I didn’t want to miss seeing the Karl Lagerfeld exhibition even if the options were to go on the last day and in the rain. Karl Lagerfeld was both a controversial figure and a genius designer, although you would not know from viewing this exhibition, which focused on the latter. This brings to question what exactly should be the role of museums in storytelling. Do they not have a responsibility to present the entire profile of an artist? Does society not benefit from knowing both the art and the artist?….

New York Art Week Extravaganza 2023

The month of May is when the Big Apple is celebrating its Art Week, stretching it from May 5th through 22nd, where museums, galleries and art fairs come together to share the best of what the art world offers. For art lovers, this is a great time for a spring break or a weekend stay in NYC when the weather is generally at its best behavior. I managed to attend three art fairs on the last weekend of this extravaganza before it ended. Here’s what I like and didn’t much care for….

This year the Harlem Fine Arts Show celebrated its 15th anniversary in New York City, bringing together black art gallery owners, art collectives and artists to celebrate 15 years of ensuring opportunities for Black Art to thrive. Buying Black Art or what is sometimes referred to as African Diaspora Art has become increasingly popular among both novice and seasoned collectors of all nationalities. Yet there is still a long road to inclusion…

A Review: From Beyond King Tut… The Immersive Experience

Capture6 1

The rise of immersive exhibitions are making their way through the US, offering us a new way of learning and exploring the arts competing with art fairs, galleries and museums for your eyes and money. More recently, I dragged my kid sister to see the King Tut immersive exhibition in NYC before it closed, now headed to its next major city. There are pros and cons to what this new entertainment media offers and its potential. This latest craze in interactive art and virtual reality stimulation so far is gaining traction. Here’s how?

A Review: Whitney Museum Exhibition on Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria …..”no existe un mundo poshuracán”

IMG 9384 scaled

This exhibition by Puerto Rican artists and curators at the Whitney Museum is a first step in helping to understand the complexity of Puerto Rico/US colonial status disguised as a commonwealth. The exhibition merges the long-term damage of US policies on the island’s sovereignty and its economy with the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria followed by more disastrous policies and the recent earthquakes hence the phrase “no existe un mundo poshuracán.

2022 Art Basel Miami … Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in Grand Style

Capture29 2 e1672630607555

After two years of uncertainty caused by the pandemic this year Art Basel was in full force not holding anything back as the art world descended on the city of Miami for a week of art, fashion, music, and partying. Thousands of art collectors, dealers, artists, curators, celebrities and party animals will experience what is most likely the biggest international art fair in all of North America. Every December this art fair, which is now an entire week, gets bigger and better as it is no longer just concentrated at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year, Miami Art week had over 80+ venues throughout the city of Miami with its fair share of controversy starting with over two billion in art sales even as we are approaching a recession….
