Visiting Cuba: Is Now a Good Time?

IMG 9940 scaled

Good news for Cuba, President Joe Biden on June 1 of this year has finally gotten around to revoking a series of restrictions on flights to Cuba that were imposed by Donald Trump allowing US airlines to fly to all of Cuba’s airports. Unfortunately, this falls short of fully reinstating the Obama administration policies towards Cuba.  A bit disappointing for folks who would like to travel freely to the island. I was fortunate to visit Havana, Cuba in 2017 when President Obama had lifted US restrictions, allowing travelers to independently travel to Cuba without being part of an authorized travel program….

A Review of the Off Broadway Musical “Americano”

Capture

If you’re looking for an opportunity to see a wonderful musical that doesn’t break the bank, then you have until June 19 to go see Americano: A New Musical at the New World Stages theater in midtown Manhattan.  This musical is a true and uplifting story of a young immigrant brought to the US illegally as a child, unbeknownst to him finding out later in life that his dream to join the Marines would be shattered.     We know these individuals as dreamers. There are 3.6 million dreamers waiting for an opportunity to become US citizens and this musical offer its audience what that emotional journey is like….

Spending a “Memorial” Weekend in New York City

Nothing beats spending a weekend holiday in Manhattan followed by pleasant weather and a long list of things to do over two days. The crowds were intense, although the same could be said of most beaches during the Memorial weekend.  Best part was not having to get into your car or hop on the train to get back home after a long day of visiting the Met, watching a musical, dining and drinking.   If you are looking to plan a short weekend getaway here is what we managed to do….

IMG 8250 2 1 scaled

If you are planning to be in Dallas for a day trip or longer and you are looking for how best to use your time, let me suggest visiting the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center.  Both amazing institutions are part of the Dallas Arts District, one of the largest in the country.   The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) is also one of the top ten largest museums in the US having one of the most comprehensive art collections that reflects the entire globe and, surprisingly, admission is free all the time.

A Homage to Carmen Herrera, Latinx Pioneer Geometric Abstract Painter–1915-2022

IMG 2748

In February 2022, Carmen Herrera dies at the age of 106, having gained fame in her 80’s when her artwork began to sell, finally recognized by the art world. As both a female and Latin artist, she is a pioneer in the Geometric minimalism artistic movement started in the early 1940’s (although mostly ignored) known for her simple lines, forms and colors. I was fortunate to see 50 pieces of her work at the Whitney Museum in NY in 2016 entitled Lines of Sight that showcased the range of her work as far back as 1948….

Art Review: New York Art Expo 2021

IMG 7754 1 scaled

Art fairs are slowly returning after almost a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic.   The New York Art Expo 2021, which usually is held in the spring, moved their trade show to October at Pier 36.  This art fair is sponsored by the Redwood Art Group and is one of the largest art shows offer.  This year, their numbers were down significantly to about 200 international galleries and artists.   Still, there was something for every taste and price point.

Art Review: NYC Art on Paper Annual Fair

IMG 7468 scaled

Art Fairs are gradually finding their way back to cities while adjusting to a post pandemic climate. New York city alone has a half dozen show scheduled during the months of September and October. I recently attended the annual Art on Paper Fair and was delighted to see a wide range of US and international galleries exhibiting recent works from a diversity of artists. What’s different about this show is its focus on artworks that are paper based. All works use paper as its medium, whether its drawings, sculptures, or photography……..

Van Gogh, A True Immersive Post Pandemic Escape

Capture12

Recently, I attended the Van Gogh: Immersive Experience in New York City and found it to be the best post-pandemic escapism that I wholeheartedly recommend. I am careful not to call this an exhibition since it is not.  So what is it you ask?  A sensory stimulation that is high-tech, educational, and super enjoyable. It combines the best of a prolific artist’s works, in this case Vincent Van Gogh, with an explosion of projected lights, colorful images and a VR (Virtual Reality) experience along with music from a surround sound system similar to an IMAX theater.
