Surviving a pandemic has been different for everyone. For many, it has been devastating, having lost a loved one, a job, or bankrupting a once-thriving business. For others, it’s been an inconvenience, a readjustment, or in some cases, an opportunity. In a paralyzed Art World, it pains me to see what is happening to all forms of art and the impact that this will have on young people.  I often wonder how artists of color are surviving in what is an environment of steep privilege and limited opportunities.

In a paralyzed Art World, it pains me to see what is happening to all forms of Art and the impact that this will have on young people. I often wonder how artists of color are surviving in what is an environment of steep privilege and limited opportunities. How do these tumultuous times impact their ability to create while paying their bills and protecting themselves and their families? As minority artists, how are they dealing with the racial divide, COVID, and the declining economy, and how does this get interpreted in their creativeness?

For the remainder of this year, I committed to interviewing four emerging minority artists primarily from urban centers in New Jersey to be able to learn and share their stories on what surviving, or thriving is like for each of them and how these uncertain times has influenced their artistry.

Exploring One’s Own Backyard….You don’t have to travel far to experience something cool

During these uncertain times, we are all feeling the frustrations and sadness of not being able to travel. The month of August has been excruciating for me as it is the time that I tend to travel internationally, and it ain’t happening. So what is the solution?
As I forge through this pandemic,  I want to share some tips on how to explore places closer to home and my own local travel experiences with the hope that you will be inspired to do the same. I am fortunate to live in New Jersey close to quite a bit of unique possibilities from New York to Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut.  I will be featuring on my blog a BackYard Series of possibilities until it gradually becomes safer to travel. You don’t have to travel far to experience something cool!

How To Stick To Your Bucket List Now And Post COVID

There has never been a more uncertain gut feeling about the future than now as we confront this pandemic and its impact on our lives and those of our loved ones.   Keeping a bucket list may at times feel futile or insignificant but it shouldn’t.  We will get past this, much like the Spanish Influenza 90 years ago. Actually, this is a good time to rethink one’s goals and rework them to fit a more thoughtful timeline. I thought it would be fitting to explore how to keep to that elusive bucket list that we all desire, especially as we age, and time becomes an increasing obstacle.

Jean-Michel Basquiat….An Artist for Today’s Uncertain Times

In the spring of 2019, I obtained tickets for the Brant Foundation’s opening of its new space in East Village NY with an inaugural exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat works. The Peter Brant Foundation is part of this growing number of “private collection museums” by billionaires who are given huge tax breaks for” sharing” with the public their art collections but under limited terms set by the owners (another tax scam favoring the elite).

Book Review: White Fragility …Why it’s so Hard for White People to Talk about Racism by Robin DiAngelo…a book for today’s social justice movement.

I do not recall during my college years or the early part of my professional career hearing much about structural or systemic racism, but that was 40+years ago. It is fair to say that the last 10-15 years this topic has been gradually surfacing in different manifestations best demonstrated by the Black Lives Matter movement reaching an unparalleled global impact brought on by the cruel lynching death of George Floyd.

The Cardboard Placard: An Evolved Art Form For Protesting

After ten days of witnessing a massive global reaction to George Floyd’s killing and realizing that the pandemic is no longer dominating the headlines, I wanted to experience or partake in some small and safe way in this extraordinary call for action.   On a sunny Sunday morning, I  checked the local New York news to see what was happening in the city that I may want to photograph. There was to be a Meditation Protest at the Brooklyn’s  Fort Green Park at 10 am that …

NYC: An All-Mighty Powerful City in Quarantined

In April 2020, after 30 days of being quarantined, I was no longer able to resist my curiosity to stroll though NYC’s main attractions to see for myself the desolation of such a powerful city. A 35-minute ride into the city’s main artery —Time Square, where huge colorful LEDs billboards reign and theater dominates, one can immediately see the desolation of a city known…..
